Nicki moved from Amsterdam to Tokyo as a trailing wife with her Japanese husband, who also had never lived in Japan before. “It’ll be fun, just for a year or two or three,” he had said. Without too much research, or learning the language much, she moved to Japan. 2-3 years became 10. In those years she started her own business (Tokiotours), had her daughter (now 9), lost both her parents in the span of a year, virtually lost her business due to Covid, lost her marriage due to betrayal and moved back empty handed with one suitcase and her daughter back to Amsterdam. Eventually she lost her daughter when her ex took her with him back to Tokyo. Her life has been a tremendous struggle that would have left many in despair, but with a healthy dose of therapy and pure grit and determination, she has managed to come out on top. How?
